Chief Onyiuke Athletics Championship:Two UNIZIK students emerge winners

Eigoge John Ochoyoda and Precious Nwobu have both emerged Best Male and Female Athletes of the just concluded Chief Moye Onyiuke Athletics Championship for students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The two-day Athletics Championship held between October 23-24, 2021 at the Rojenny Stadium Oba was facilitated by the state Athletics Coach Johnny Igboka to discover, nurture and prepare UNIZIK students who have flair for Track and Field events to be in competition mood ahead of the forthcoming Inter-Universities Games such as South East Universities Games (SEUGA) and Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) scheduled to hold in the first quarter of next year.

The maiden edition of the Chief Moye Onyiuke Athletics Championship featured 10 events, Discus, Javelin, Shotput, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres with over 80 students of the institution taking part in the sporting programme.

Eigoge Ochoyoba a 500-level student of Medical Laboratory Science won 3 Gold medals in Discus, Javelin and Shotput to emerge overall Best Male Athlete while Precious Nwobi, a 400-level student also of Medical Laboratory Science claimed four medals, Gold each in 200, 400 and 800 metres and a silver medal in 100 metres.

In a reception held last Tuesday at the frontage of the Festus Aghagbo Nwako Library UNIZIK, the students who came tops in their individual events were rewarded with cash incentives of N15,000, N10,000 and N5,000 for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals respectively.
