Bishop Ikeakor condemns resurgence of idolatry in southeast

The Anglican Bishop of Amichi Diocese, in Anambra State, Rt Rev Ephraim Ikeakor, has condemned the resurgence idolatry practices Christian-dominated southeast region.

The cleric made this known during a press conference and inspection visit at St Philip Anglican Church Eziama Amichi, in Nnewi South LGA, venue of the forthcoming 3rd Session of the 5th synod of the diocese.

He said there is an alarming rate at which many church members, especially the youths practice idolatry in the southeast under the guise of cultural rejuvenation.

The prelate also decried the situation where every church goer is called a Christian irrespective of his lifestyle outside the church. He said that a true Christian who has encountered Jesus Christ is known by the fruits he or she bears which includes: righteousness, forgiveness, humility among others.

Speaking on the forthcoming Synod of the diocese, the Prelate said synod as the legislative arm of every diocese in the Anglican Communion is made up of three sessions. According to him, this years edition is the 3rd Session of the 5th synod of the diocese and is themed “Clearing The Identity Crisis: Who Actually Is A Christian.” It will be held from 8th to 11th of June 2023. 

He said the theme of the forthcoming synod was prayerfully chosen just as he mentioned that the definition of Christianity has become subjective and relative.

Explaining further, the Bishop said Christian leaders now go outside biblical injunctions and doctrines to determine who is a Christian from their individual perspectives. He said that there was an urgent need for church members and the society at large to come to terms with the true meaning of Christianity and who actually is a Christian.

On the achievement of the diocese in the last one year, the bishop noted with gratitude to God that the diocesan College Of Nursing Sciences’ school of midwifery has been accredited while an imposing ultra modern hostel commissioned recently for the school.   

He said the Nursing and Midwifery Council has upgraded the students intake for the college of nursing sciences and it is expected that very soon the institution will be duly accredited for award of HND Nursing to students.

The bishop equally announced provision of recent state of the art modern equipment and facilities both in the diocesan hospital and college of nursing sciences.

In a his speech during the press conference, Chairman of Nigeria Union Of Journalists Anambra State Council, Comrade Emeka Odogwu, thanked Bishop Ikeakor for his cordial relationship with journalists while soliciting his support for the Union.

The synod inspection visit was well attended by clergy and laity of the diocese.The synod will take place at St Philip Anglican Church Eziama, Amichi in Nnewi South LGA of Anambra state form Thursday 8th through Sunday 11th of June 2023.
