Bill for Establishment of FCT Development Commission Passes Second Reading in Senate
A bill proposing the creation of the Federal Capital Territory Satellite Towns Development Commission has passed its second reading in the Nigerian Senate. Sponsored by Senator Aliyu Wadada Ahmed, the bill aims to foster the development and management of infrastructure in the FCT’s satellite towns. The proposed commission will address infrastructure deficits, control urban sprawl, and promote sustainable development in these areas. Senator Wadada explained that while Abuja has grown significantly, its neighboring towns face challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and overcrowding due to the capital’s growth. The bill seeks to create a commission to oversee development within 60 kilometers of the FCT’s borders. Senate members, including Senator Sani Musa, highlighted the importance of the bill in addressing the overstrained infrastructure and improving conditions in these towns. The Senate has tasked its FCT committee with reviewing the bill and providing recommendations within two weeks.
