Banks’ deposits with the Central Bank of Nigeria soared by 907% year-on-year to N68.9 trillion in H1 2025, up from N6.84 trillion in H1 2024, indicating excess liquidity in the banking system.

The surge follows CBN’s shift to a single-tier remuneration structure for its Standing Deposit Facility (SDF). Meanwhile, bank borrowings through the Standing Lending Facility rose slightly to N59.84 trillion. The CBN also ramped up liquidity mop-up, selling N8.05 trillion in OMO treasury bills.
