Awka: Rotary Club International Embarks On Tree Planting Exercise

Rotary Club of Awka Nnamdi Azikiwe University, in conjunction with that of Awka Smithtown, and Awka Men, yesterday embarked on planting
of two hundred trees in Awka as part of the club’s efforts towards safeguarding the environment.

The tree planting exercise was kicked off at Immigration junction of Esther Obiako Street and was terminated at Book Foundation axis of the
street.

The exercise which was in line with the present administration’s call for massive tree planting in the state, by Ndi Anambra was aimed at
beautifying the environment and as well curb ozone layer depletion.

Speaking shortly after the exercise, the Member Representing Orumba North at the Anambra state House of Assembly and Deputy Majority
Leader of the seventh Assembly, Honourable Emeka Aforka, and the Member Representing Nnewi North at the state Assembly, Honourable
Smart Okafor, said that tree planting is key to the survival of the universe, and as such should be embraced by the masses for a better and more habitable environment.

Contributing, the state Commissioner for Housing, Architect Michael Okonkwo who commended Rotary Club for embarking on the charity work in the state’s capital city, discouraged people from unnecessary deforestation, and urged them to always plant five trees whenever they cutoff a tree, as according to him the importance of trees in
environment cannot be over emphasized.

In various interviews, Presidents of the Club that led the exercise including Rotarian Abuchi Nwozor of the ABS who is the President of Rotary Club of Awka Nnamdi Azikiwe University, that of
Awka, Rotarian Blaize Nnadozie, and his Awka Smithtown counterpart, Rotarian Chidi Obiudu, noted that the gesture was part of the club’s
numerous charity works in the society, and disclosed that they decided to plant the two hundred trees to beautify and save the environment from hazards.

Other government functionaries that participated in the exercise were Managing Director of Leisure Park and Beautification, Lady Ify Atogu, and Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Lady Chidimma Oramalu.
