The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) Branch, has reaffirmed the need for the speedy implementation of the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement in the university and other state-owned institutions in the region.
The union, in a statement issued after its congress said the implementation had become imperative to address the welfare concerns of its members who have remained on the same salary structure since 2009.
The statement was jointly signed by the Chairman of the branch, Comrade Bruno Ibekilo, and the Secretary, Comrade Udoka Bernard Alajekwu.
The union said its position had been communicated to the university authorities, noting that the delay in executing the agreement was no longer acceptable.
ASUU-COOU also threw its weight behind the efforts of the national body of the union, working through the zones, particularly the ASUU Owerri Zone coordinated by the Zonal Coordinator, Cde. Dennis Aribodor.
The branch clarified that the intervention was in the collective interest of members and aimed at supporting state university branches where implementation had yet to commence, including COOU and Imo State University.
“It is important to state clearly that these efforts are not about seeking relevance but about ensuring that our members in state universities do not continue to suffer neglect,” the statement read.
The union acknowledged that the COOU management had made firm promises and put machinery in motion for the implementation of the agreement.
It, however, called for urgency in that regard, warning that further delay would continue to affect the lives and welfare of lecturers in the institution.
“While we appreciate the assurances from the university authorities, we urge them to translate those promises into action without further delay,” the union added.
