Anambra sports boss gets Olympic Committee appointment

Patrick-Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra Sports Development Commission, has been appointed member of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Sports and Environment Commission.

The appointment is contained in a statement released by Tony Nezianya, the Public Relations Officer of the NOC, on Tuesday.

The Statement said Simon Nkom and Bello Suleiman would serve as chairman and secretary of the 16-man Commission.

Other Commissions constituted were Technical/Development, Marketing/Sponsorship, Liaison Commission, medical/Scientific, Women/Sports Commission, Sports for All, Athletes CommissionOlympic Education/Culture, Ethics/Good Governance Commission, OlympAfrica Development, 

Onyedum is the current Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, and the immediate past Chairman of the Anambra State Athletics Association.

He was until his appointment, the representative of Southeast Zone in the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

A strong grassroots sports development enthusiast, Onyedum started his sporting career as a volleyball and tennis player as a pupil of the Ogbete Primary School, Coal Camp, Enugu.

He played football as a goalkeeper and played for Works United FC, Enugu, before going to Tokyo, Japan, in 1992 on a sporting expedition. 

He was active in sports as an Athletics Coach in Italy for about 10 years before retiring in 2006.

In 2016, Onyedum sponsored Under-18 Southeast Athletics Championships at the Rojenny Sports & Leisure Centre. In 2017 he sponsored Under-16 Southeast Athletics Meet.

In 2019, he sponsored the Team Southeast Under-15 contingent to the All-Nigeria Athletics Championships in Ilaro, Ogun State.

Onyedum continued to display his love for sports in 2021 and 2022 when he bankrolled the first and second Anaocha Athletics Champion back to back.

In 2016, Onyedum was elected as AAA Chairman and in 2017 he was elected to the board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria as representative of the zone where he served as Chairman of the Committee on Road Race — Marathon.
