Anambra NUJ honours veteran Journalists at accountability conference

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Anambra State Council has held an accountability conference where they honored their veteran colleagues for their contributions to the field of journalism. 

The event was a testament to the hard work and dedication of individuals who have played a significant role in upholding the highest standards in journalism and promoting transparency and accountability in the media industry. 

During the conference, the NUJ also celebrated their patrons for their achievements and contributions to the growth of the society. 

Delivering his keynote address on “Leadership accountability and economic growth: the crucial role of media,” Professor Clifford Nwanna from the Department of Fine and Applied Art at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka emphasized the detrimental effects of lack of accountability, leading to impunity becoming widespread. 

He lamented the persistent issue of corruption in many African countries, noting that Nigerian leaders have yet to fully recognize the media as partners in the nation’s development.

Despite the challenges posed by the lack of leadership accountability, Professor Nwanna acknowledged the vital role that the media can play in fostering accountability. 

He urged journalists to leverage tools such as the Freedom of Information Act and whistleblowing to drive economic growth. 

Additionally, Professor Nwanna called upon media owners and individuals of means to support initiatives that empower media practitioners, emphasizing the importance of organizing workshops to enhance their skills and knowledge.

Earlier in his opening remark, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Emeka Onwudinjo, thanked NUJ Anambra for the theme of the event, noting that all should work towards ensuring accountability in the society.

Contributing, Chairman of Anambra State Local Government Service Commission, Barrister Vin Ezeaka, said corruption has permeated deep even into the primary and secondary school. 

“We are now living in a system where schools are established and called special centres. Corruption is not limited to those at the corridors of power and workers but also at the grassroots.

He said for corruption to be stopped, everyone must rise for the fight. He said the Anambra State government has embarked on a value reorientation programme particularly at the primary and secondary schools. 

Contributing, Commissioner for Agriculture, Foster Ihejiofor, said accountability is a shared responsibility and that leadership is not about occupying positions but a role, encouraging everyone to play their roles for the good of the society. 

Earlier, NUJ Anambra State Chairman, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu emphasized that the conference served as a platform to celebrate the valuable work of  veterans to inspire the next generation of journalists to carry on their legacy.

The Chairman of the NUJ Patrons and Veterans Day Committee, Comrade Ukpa Ewa Eke, noted that the programme was aimed at exploring how leadership accountability was integral to economic growth and how the media serves as a cornerstone in this dynamic.

The Transition Committee Chairman of Njikoka Local Government Area, Barrister Chinedu Ononiba, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Anambra ICT, Fred Agbata, and the Commander, Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Daniel Ogbonna Onyishi commended NUJ for organizing the event. 

Award recipients at the event, include: Chief Tabansi and Chief Mrs Obikwelu, commended NUJ members for shaping the future of the society through their practices, and assured of continued efforts in touching lives positively, as well as support to activities of the union.

Some of the veterans present at the event included Comrade Peter Nwasike, Comrade Sunny Azuka David, Comrade Uche Osunkwo, Comrade Uzoma Nzeagwu, Comrade Cyprian Ebele, Comrade Okechukwu Obeta, Comrade Michael Ezenwata, Comrade Charles Onyekamuo, Comrade Jude Atupulazi, Comrade Emmanuel Ifesinachi, Comrade Monic Okechukwu, Comrade Ikem Asika, and Comrade Francis Ekpone.

The event climaxed with the celebration of birthday of Iyom Ngọzi Chinelo Obikwelu (Nwanyibuife) and inauguration of Veterans Association of the NUJ with Dr Dennis Ekemezie as Chairman, and Mrs Monic Okechukwu as Secretary.
