The representative of Awka South 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Henry Mbachu, has lamented the growing level of poverty in Nigeria, demanding that urgent action should be taken by the government to tackle the menace.

Mbachu, who made the lamentation while touring some markets in his constituency, advocated for a change of strategy to tackle the menace. He said that if a new strategy was not developed and adopted, the ugly situation might worsen in the nearest future.

The lawmaker maintained that a sustainable approach remained key to tackling the country’s increasing rate of poverty, saying that he was saddened by the level of poverty and inequality threatening the country’s security, stability and unity.

A statement from his media office revealed that the lawmaker also gave out some money to support local market men and women in his constituency.

“Mbachu in his continued populist representation, wherein his engagements have been focused on the people, especially the poor who live below the poverty line, recently toured some markets in his constituency distributing seed capitals to local market men and women.

“The impact of the activities of these petty traders on the local economy is so enormous that one would wonder how such capital base of N10,000 can make a huge difference in people’s lives”, the statement partly reads.

The statement quoted the lawmaker as making case for the creation of more “job opportunities for the underprivileged, implementing economic and institutional reforms” which everyone would benefit from.

Mbachu also called on the young people to come assist the government in the fight against corruption by being active partners in the development and growth of their local communities. “Well to do people should be done with ‘dorime’ and 21 Years Liquor. The cost of one bottle of exotic drink can end excruciating poverty in many families”, he implored.
