There was relief at the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home, Agulu, this week as the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, intervened to support Sochima, a toddler battling complications of Sickle Cell Disorder.
The Commissioner’s gesture followed an appeal by the Director of the Home, Mrs Aisha Edwards Maduagwu, who had drawn attention to the plight of Sochima and other vulnerable children under the Home’s care.
Onyekesi, who met with Maduagwu at the orphanage, said the state government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo remains committed to the health and welfare of mothers and children across the state.

Moved by the account presented by the Director, the Commissioner immediately arranged for the delivery of essential supplies, including diapers, beverages and other caregiving items, to the Home for Sochima and other children.
Checks revealed that following the intervention, Sochima was transferred from the Child Emergency Ward to the general Children’s Ward at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, COOUTH, Amaku.
Hospital sources said the toddler is responding positively to treatment and has resumed playing with other children.
Speaking on behalf of the Home, Maduagwu described the Commissioner’s support as “long overdue,” and expressed gratitude to Onyekesi and the Anambra State Government for standing by the state’s most vulnerable children.
She also prayed for God’s grace and strength for the Commissioner in the discharge of her duties.
