After Two Decades of Uncertainty, Hope Rises as Anambra and Abia Move Closer to Boundary Peace
The National Boundary Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the long standing boundary dispute between Anambra and Abia states, assuring that the process will be accelerated to bring lasting peace to the affected communities.
Speaking during a joint meeting on the Anambra Abia interstate boundary dispute held in Awka, the Director General of the National Boundary Commission, Mr. Adamu Adaji, disclosed that both states have already reached an agreement on fifteen kilometres of the twenty three kilometre boundary under dispute.
He explained that discussions are ongoing to resolve the remaining eight kilometres and appealed to both states to continue embracing peace, noting that harmonious coexistence would foster development and strengthen relationships among neighbouring communities.
Mr. Adaji expressed concern that the dispute has remained unresolved for over two decades. He assured stakeholders that the commission would carefully examine all relevant historical and legal documents to ensure a fair and lasting resolution acceptable to both states.
In their separate remarks, the Deputy Governor of Anambra State and Chairman of the Anambra State Boundary Committee, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Boundary Matters, Mr. Ekenechukwu Okoye, and the Deputy Governor of Abia State and Chairman of the Abia State Boundary Committee, Engineer Ikechukwu Emetu, represented by the state’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Barrister Chijioke Nwankwo, commended the National Boundary Commission for its renewed commitment. They reaffirmed the readiness of both state governments to cooperate fully with the commission in achieving a peaceful and permanent resolution of the boundary dispute.
