Abia State Government Condemns Killing of Commercial Driver in Aba, Demands Justice as Nigerian Army Launches Investigation
The Abia State Government has condemned the killing of a commercial driver in Aba and vowed to ensure justice is served.
The victim, identified as Kelechi Ejiofor, was reportedly shot by a soldier at the Uratta Timber Market in Aba, an incident that has sparked outrage among residents and raised concerns over the conduct of security personnel.
In an official statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, the government described the killing as “heartbreaking” and extended condolences to the deceased’s family and associates.
The government assured the public that it has initiated high-level engagement with military authorities to ensure a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. It stressed that anyone found culpable would face both disciplinary and legal consequences.
“We wish to assure the family of the deceased and the general public that justice will not only be pursued but will be seen to be done”, the statement said.
Authorities also called on residents to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations continue, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting lives, upholding the rule of law, and preventing injustice.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has indicated that the incident is under investigation, with reports suggesting the shooting may have occurred after the driver was allegedly involved in a road incident and attempted to flee, though this account remains subject to ongoing inquiry.
The killing has intensified public calls for accountability and better civil-military relations in the state.
