Abakaliki Catholic Diocese celebrates Golden Jubilee, seeks additional diocese in Ebonyi

The Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Ebonyi, Most Rev Peter Nworie, has called on the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) to speed up process for the installation of a new diocese in the state.

Nworie made the call on Thursday, at the St. Theresa’s Cathedral, Abakaliki during a Special Service to mark the church’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the church was established a diocese in 1973.

The bishop said that the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki has produced many parishes since its creation in 1973 and was due for a new diocese.

He noted that it was only the state in the South-East that had only one diocese and urged the CBCN to create a new Diocese in the state to bring the church closer to the people.

“We have had so many parishes installed, when are we going to have a new Diocese created out of Abakaliki Diocese.

“So, I challenge you the Catholics in Ebonyi to pray about this today and I want to say it before the President of The Catholic Bishops conference in this Mass, that we need help, we need a new diocese here,” Nworie called.

He also reviewed plans to embark on other projects to include; the establishment of a catholic University, upgrading and improving hospital facilities under the diocese.

He disclosed that Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Afikpo and its Catholic Mission School of Nursing, St. Patrick’s Mile Four Hospital among others, would be upgraded to perform effectively.

He recalled that Gov Francis Nwifuru had ordered return of mission schools to original owners after it request to be handed over.

He promised continuous collaboration between the church and the state government to ensure people get the best.

In his remarks, Gov Nwifuru, promised to support the projects and ensured its completion in one year.

Nwifuru applauded the diocese for its golden jubilee celebration and growth and urged the priests to represent the image of the church at all times. (NAN)
