UNIZIK VC urges students to uphold academic discipline at Orientation

The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), Professor Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, has called on students admitted into the Pre-Medical Programmes of the institution to prioritize academic discipline to achieve success in their chosen fields. 

Prof Anyaehie made the call on Thursday during the orientation programme for the students organized by UNIZIK’s Pre-Medical Programmes Unit at the JUPEB Hall of the institution.

The VC, who was represented by the Director of Continuous Education Programme (CEP), Prof. Greg Obiamalu, emphasized that academic discipline is a crucial factor in attaining excellence, stressing the importance of cultivating good study habits and adhering to the university’s rules and regulations. 

He said, “You must understand that to succeed in your chosen careers, you need to exhibit good behavior and character. Don’t wait to be told who to associate with or how to prioritize your studies.

“Take charge of your academic journey, make wise choices, and strive for excellence. Your grades and campus life will reflect your dedication and discipline.”

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the University’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment for all students, emphasizing that their welfare remains a top priority of his administration.

Earlier in her welcome address, Coordinator of UNIZIK Pre-Medical Programmes Unit,
Prof Ebere Ihegihu, said the occasion was used to formally welcome participants, outline academic expectations and familiarise students with the structure, learning processes and support systems of the institution.

“This forum is more than a meeting. It is a conversation — a deliberate, structured, and heartfelt conversation between those who lead and those who learn; between those who have walked the path and those who are just beginning their journey.

“It is the kind of conversation that transforms institutions, because it refuses to let administration and academics exist in separate silos while students navigate the crossroads alone,” she said.

Prof Ihegihu explained that her Unit uniquely coordinates 12 programmes across 5 faculties, including Medicine, Pharmacy, and Health Sciences, adding that the session aligns with UNIZIK’s commitment to quality education and ensuring that students are well-prepared and positioned to succeed. 

UNIZIK Registrar, Dr Gloria Okeke, represented by Mr Emma Nnaemeka– Deputy Registrar II and Administration Officer faculty of Biosciences–urged students to ensure they meet 75 percent lecture attendance, dress appropriately, shun hard drugs, cultism and examination misconduct.

Also, Dean of Students Affairs, Prof Kingsley Ubaoji, advised students to prioritize their studies. He cautioned them to stay focused, noting that relationships and other distractions have their place, but timing is key.

Chief Safety Officer of the university, Ken Chukwura, encouraged the students to be diligent and law-abiding in their studies. He cautioned them against cheating and bad lifestyle that could derail their academic progress.

Others who spoke at the event stressed the importance of discipline, commitment, and active engagement, emphasizing the need to maintain academic integrity throughout the programme.

The orientation concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students sought clarification on academic, technical and administrative issues.
