Violence erupted at Union Primary School, Amanuke, in Awka North Local Government Area, the venue of the election of the President General of the Amanuke Development Union, during the counting and announcement of votes.

The electoral committee had concluded the counting of votes, recording 532 votes for Mr. Simon Orakwe and 576 votes for Dr. Emeka Odogwu, but could not formally declare Dr. Odogwu the winner before thugs, allegedly sponsored by some mischief-makers, stormed the venue and started causing havoc.

The exercise, which followed the expiration of the tenure of Mr. Samuel Okoye and his executive in August 2025, was supervised by representatives of the Anambra State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Awka North Local Government Authority, Anambra State Town Union Council, the Nigeria Police, the Army, the Department of State Services, and other security agencies.

Voting, done using Option A4, commenced peacefully with the accreditation of voters.

However, tension started rising when it became obvious that Dr. Odogwu had carried the day, as voters who lined up in his support visibly occupied three lines as against those of his opponents.

After the counting of votes confirmed his victory with 576 votes, thugs besieged the premises, disrupting the process and forcing it to come to an end without a formal conclusion.

Earlier, Dr. Odogwu told the press that the votes counted showed he won the election and thanked Ndi Amanuke for the confidence placed in him to deliver leadership focused on accountability, community participation, and grassroots development.

He also made a public appeal for reconciliation and cooperation across political divides, urging all groups and interests within the town to work together for the progress of Amanuke.

One of the candidates in the election, Mr. Orakwe, rejected the claim that Dr. Odogwu won the election, insisting that he won based on his own assessment of the votes, but acknowledged that the voting was peaceful and orderly despite the disruption that followed the counting stage.
