Governor Soludo Does Not Influence Contract Awards in Anambra – Ezeobi
By Oguocha Chukwuebuka, Awka

The GM/CEO of the Bureau for Public Procurement (BPP), Anambra State, Engineer Okey Ezeobi has emphasized that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo does not interfere in contract awards or employment decisions, firmly upholding due process in governance.
Speaking at his office at the BPP complex in Awka during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) following his recognition as NUJ Anambra State 2025 Man of the Year, Arch. Ezeobi reaffirmed the governor’s commitment to transparency and competitive procurement practices.
Reflecting on his award, Ezeobi admitted that he is not one to readily accept honors from organizations. However, after careful consideration, he embraced the recognition, surprised by the overwhelming support from individuals, including those he had not spoken to in a long time. He marveled at the sacrifices made to secure his win, describing the achievements as divinely ordained.

Delving into his childhood experiences, Ezeobi revealed that his early years were marked by challenges. “The first time I wore shoes was in Primary Four,” he recalled. “I don’t know how I got to where I am today, but I always tell people—I am a man helped by God.”
His educational journey took him through primary and secondary school in Lagos, before proceeding to the University of Nigeria, where he earned his BSc and MSc in Architecture, graduating as the best student in his class.
His career began in Lagos, where he practiced with Designing Point and Interior Options, later establishing his own firm in 2000–2001. Over the years, his business expanded from a one-man startup to a thriving enterprise with over 100 employees, operating branches in Anambra, Abuja, and Lagos. Today, he runs an architectural firm, construction company, furniture factory, and building services organization, with a strong focus on human capital development and humanitarian initiatives

When asked how he became a part of Governor Soludo’s administration, Ezeobi disclosed that he initially declined the appointment but eventually reconsidered after repeated engagements with influential figures.
As the head of procurement, he described his experience as fulfilling. “This is the best job in the world,” he stated emphatically. “The best person to work with is Professor Charles Soludo. He makes governance seamless by not interfering in procurement. Jobs in Anambra State are awarded competitively and at the best possible prices. Even if you were the governor’s twin, you would still have to compete fairly with others. That makes my work easier and ensures credibility in governance.”
Under his leadership, Anambra State became the first in Nigeria to receive a $2.5 million award from the World Bank for its exceptional procurement transparency.

“The World Bank has acknowledged our integrity, rewarding us financially for maintaining transparency. We have saved the state billions of naira through proper procurement practices,” he added.
Speaking on Governor Soludo’s leadership philosophy, he noted: “The governor does not approve contracts unless they benefit the common people. If a woman selling crayfish cannot see direct value in it, he won’t go into it. Every project must bring measurable impact to the lives of Anambra residents.”
Discussing some challenges in procurement, Ezeobi pointed out that many companies lack tax compliance, even though they possess excellent technical capabilities.
However, he observed a shift in private-sector attitudes, with more businesses now realizing they can engage in public sector projects without needing political connections. “More firms are registering with regulatory bodies like the Pension Scheme, ITF, and NSITF to meet requirements for government contracts,” he explained.
The NUJ Anambra State 2025 Man of the Year Planning Committee Chairman, Comrade Francis Ekpone, expressed appreciation for Ezeobi’s time and leadership, congratulating him for emerging victorious among a strong field of nominees.
Similarly, NUJ Chairman, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, commended, Ezeobi’s expertise and dedication to the state, emphasizing that, his leadership at BPP has significantly contributed to Anambra’s progress.
The award will be officially conferred on him in August, marking yet another milestone in his distinguished career.
