Enugu Hosts Celebratory Dinner Honoring Medical Director and Ex-Rangers Heroes
In a memorable gathering that celebrated unity and resilience, Enugu played host to a distinguished dinner in honor of Professor Joseph Ugboaja, OON, Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi. The event, chaired by the esteemed Professor Chinedu Nebo, CON, also spotlighted the legendary players of the Enugu Rangers International Football Club from the historic era of 1970 to 1975.
The evening was marked by the presentation of a commemorative plaque to Chief Ben Etiaba by veterans of the Enugu Rangers, a gesture underscoring his “benevolence, mentorship, brotherliness, and compassion.” Those signing the tribute included Christian Chukwu MFR, Emmanuel Okala MON, Dr. Johny Egbuonu, Dominic Nwobodo, Patrick Iluno, and Francis Nwosu. “This plaque is a symbol of our enduring gratitude and recognition of the support provided by Chief Etiaba,” stated Christian Chukwu.
Citing the role these sports heroes played in lifting the spirits of the Igbo people post-civil war, Chief Etiaba expressed his deep appreciation. “I most humbly appreciate what these heroes of the Igbo nation did for our downcast people after the losses suffered as a result of the civil war of 1967 – 1970,” he said, reflecting on the club’s historic cultural impact.

Amobi Ezeaku Esq, Chief Executive Officer of Enugu Rangers International Football Club, lauded the collective achievements of the team: “These players were more than athletes; they were beacons of hope and courage at a time when our people needed them the most.”
Professor Nebo highlighted the evening’s significance, emphasizing the avenue for acknowledging both past and present leaders: “This gathering serves as a testament to our collective history and the importance of honoring those who have contributed to our community’s growth.”
Professor Joseph Ugboaja, in whose honor the event was organized, called on Igbos in national leadership positions to use their influence to develop Igboland. “This is exactly what we are doing at NAUTH to ensure that public institutions are functioning in Nigeria,” he remarked. Highlighting his ongoing efforts to transform the teaching hospital, he said, “I built the permanent site of the hospital, and our vision is to be ranked among the top 3 hospitals in Nigeria.”
Emmanuel Okala further reflected on the transformative power of sports within communities. “Our victories on the field were not just for us, but for every child and adult in Nigeria seeking a sense of normalcy and pride,” he shared with palpable emotion.
Ben Etiaba stressed the need for continuous communal support: “Every war signifies the failure of conflict resolution mechanisms but subsequently requires a post-war rebuilding of confidence in the people,” he remarked, tying historical lessons to modern challenges.
Francis Nwosu expressed gratitude for the recognition from both contemporary leaders and older comrades. “To be acknowledged after so many years fills our hearts with joy and pride,” he said, encapsulating the spirit of the evening.
