The Chairman of Sabuwa Local Government Area in Katsina State, Hon. Faruk Ayatu, has confirmed the release of at least 1,000 kidnapped victims held by bandits. Speaking to journalists in Funtua on Monday, Ayatu described Sabuwa as one of the worst-hit areas due to its proximity to bandit-infested forests bordering Kaduna, Niger, Zamfara, and Kebbi states. While acknowledging a reduction in attacks due to intensified government efforts, he expressed concern over a recent surge in violence, attributing it to negotiations between bandits and authorities in neighboring Kaduna State. “The bandits are now pressuring us to negotiate on their terms, threatening more attacks if we refuse,” Ayatu stated. He reaffirmed the local government’s stance against negotiating with criminals, arguing that such deals are deceptive. “Even if a deal is reached, they will not surrender their weapons,” he warned. Ayatu suggested that bandits resent Katsina residents because Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has refused to engage in negotiations with them. He disclosed that among the 1,000 freed victims, some were released after ransom payments, while others were let go voluntarily. However, about 70 individuals remain in captivity. Ayatu emphasized that lasting peace could only be achieved if all North-West governors adopted a unified approach to negotiations. He also praised Governor Radda for his efforts in education, healthcare, agriculture, and water supply, while residents continue to call for sustained military operations to combat the growing threat of banditry.
