WTO: Take Note,Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,Not A Nigerian,But An Igbo American.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala the Igbo woman and twice finance minister for Nigerian was the first woman foreign minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been described as a trailblazer.

Now the 66-year-old is looking to make more history as she bids to become the first African Igbo American woman to head the World Trade Organization.

Aside from her time in public office, the development economist had a quarter-century at the World Bank, rising to be managing director and running for the top role in 2012.

The biafran Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has delivered, whether in Nigeria or in other countries where she worked,” Idayat Hassan of the Centre for Democracy and Development research and advocacy group told AFP. Born in 1954 in Ogwashi Ukwu, in Delta State, South East Nigeria, her father is a traditional ruler. She spent much of her life in the United States – graduating from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard where she sent her four children.

Less we forget when Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was contesting for the DG position she complained that some top cabal’s from the northern Nigerian government didn’t want her in that position so they tried frustrating her in getting the position, and that was the reason she played the last card of switching nationality fully into been an American.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is not liked by the northern Nigerians because of her outstanding and intimidating achievements but she is loved by all Igbos and Biafran from both the south east and south south and also by the western world where she has accomplished most of landmarks records, because she is a symbol of excellence” said Rowlandgate of Odogwublog.com

The way things are looking now Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is no longer a Nigerian but an Igbo American woman, if you know then you know.

Okonjo-Iweala may have done some box-checking technocratic transparency reforms in her ministry. The former minister has portrayed herself as a champion against Nigeria’s rampant corruption, like she also said that her own mother was even kidnapped over her attempts to tackle the scourge of corruption.

Okonjo-Iweala has a very high reputation and lots of experience as a trade minister as well as a negotiator.
“ she said I have been doing this all my life, working on trade policy issues,” she said during a webinar organised by Chatham House in July.

“Most of all,” she said, the choice for director general should go beyond technical skills, “you need boldness, courage”.

She was recently named the African Union’s special envoy to mobilise international support for the continent’s efforts to address the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

Okonjo-Iweala has warned that growing protectionism and nationalism have been spurred on by the crisis and insists barriers need to be lowered to help the world recover.
