As the world marks World Physiotherapy Day, attention is drawn to the often understated but important role physiotherapy plays in helping people maintain mobility, recover from illness and live independently.

The 2026 observance focuses on the role of physiotherapy and physical activity in the prevention, management and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease and stroke. These conditions remain major health challenges and can leave survivors with long term disabilities, affecting not only individuals but also their families and communities.

For Anambra State, the observance offers an opportunity to reflect on the place of rehabilitation in healthcare delivery and the need to make such services more accessible to people who require them.

The administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has continued to emphasise healthcare delivery and access to medical services as part of its development agenda. Within this framework, rehabilitation deserves attention alongside prevention, diagnosis and treatment, particularly for vulnerable patients who require sustained care after illness or injury.

Physiotherapists are an important part of the healthcare team. Through guided exercises, physical activity and rehabilitation programmes, they help patients improve strength, mobility, balance and functional ability, enabling many to return to their daily routines.

For stroke survivors, this support can be particularly significant. Recovery does not always end when a patient leaves the hospital. Many survivors require continued rehabilitation to regain movement and adapt to changes in physical function. Consistent physiotherapy can therefore contribute to improved independence and quality of life.

The 2026 World Physiotherapy campaign also highlights the preventive value of physical activity. Regular, appropriate physical activity can contribute to cardiovascular health, while physiotherapy can support people living with health conditions to remain active within safe and manageable limits.

This message is relevant to Anambra as the state works towards a healthcare system that addresses the full continuum of care from prevention and treatment to rehabilitation and recovery.

While government investment in healthcare infrastructure and medical services remains important, equal attention to rehabilitation services, public awareness and preventive health practices can help reduce the long term impact of disabling conditions.

World Physiotherapy Day should, therefore, serve as a reminder to government, healthcare professionals and the public that recovery is an essential part of healthcare. Greater awareness and improved access to physiotherapy services can help more people regain function, remain active and participate meaningfully in their communities.
