Sen. Nkechi Nwaogu, who represented Abia Central Senatorial District from 2007 to 2015, has declared her ambition to return to the Senate in 2023.

Nwaogu made this disclosure while addressing chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Umuahia on Thursday.

She said that her ambition was driven by her passion to get back to the Senate and ensure that the National Assembly reversed its rejection of the Gender Equality Bill.

“I’m going back to the Senate to champion a course for gender equality,” she said in a speech entitled, “Message of restoration” .

She further promised that she would pursue massive skill acquisition and empowerment programmes for women.

She also said that she had garnered enough legislative experience to represent her constituency.

Nwaogu said: “As a ranking senator and having navigated through the rudiments of the parliament, I stand a better chance than anyone else to attract the much desired democracy dividend to Abia Central.

“APC ticket is a ‘jewel of inestimable value’, which must be given to candidates that are popular, credible and determined to win election.

“And I’m among the aspirants in Nigeria that have this requisite factor.

“Check my records, I have done it before and I will do it again. All the previous positions I handled were beneficial to the youths.

“If I’m elected with your support, I will replicate what I am known for and the youths of the constituency must be adequately and sufficiently empowered and employed to face the realities on ground,” she said.

Nwaogu appealed to the party delegates to consider that experience matters in law making.

According to her, over 90 percent of the current NASS leaders are all old timers in the legislature.

The senatorial hopeful further promised to address the issue of basic infrastructure and social amenities in the area, if elected.

“We are going to partner with our APC state government of Abia and relevant Federal Government agencies and parastatals to bring about the much desired democracy dividend in our area,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nwaogu, who was Chairman, Senate Committee on Gas, could not return to the Senate in 2015, having lost the election to former Abia Governor, Sen. Theodore Orji of PDP.

She was, however, compensated with an appointment as the Chairman, Governing Council of the University of Calabar, a position she held until 2021. (NAN)(
