“We’ve Got Our Lives Back” – Beneficiaries Hail Anambra Government’s Free Hydrocele Surgery Programme

Dozens of men from rural parts of Anambra State have praised the state government and ‘The Carter Center’ after conducting free surgeries to treat hydrocele; a painful and socially stigmatizing condition that causes swelling of the scrotum.
Over one hundred beneficiaries received the life-changing medical procedure during the second phase of the state-led hydrocelectomy programme which was recently concluded across Enugwu-Ukwu, Ekwulobia, and Umueri General Hospitals.
Hydrocele, known locally as “Ibi”, is one of the visible effects of Lymphatic Filariasis, a neglected tropical disease transmitted by mosquitoes.
While the condition is treatable with surgery, many affected men in low-income and rural communities have been unable to afford medical intervention, leading to years of silent suffering.
For Cosmas Chukwuneke from Nnewi, the surgery has given him a second chance at life as he has been sidelined for so many years now and been restricted to perform his daily activities.
Another beneficiary, Charles Okoye; from Enugwu-Ukwu said the surgery not only removed his pain, but also restored his confidence.
Speaking at one of the centers, Prof. Nuhu Dakum, a consultant urologist, explained that Hydrocele can severely limit a man’s mobility, livelihood, and social life, acknowledging that with the surgeries which is free of charge, the state is not just restoring health — it’s restoring dignity.
