Governor Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State has denied an allegation that one of the wanted suspects by the United States of America Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Augustine Chika Odionyenma did not bankroll his campaign and election.
Pictures had emerged online where the Governor received Odionyenma as a guest after he was declared winner of the Imo State governorship election. He had received throngs of visitors who at different times went to congratulate him on the election feat.
Ihedioha was alleged to have appointed Odionyenma as a member of the Logistics subcommittee for his inauguration as Governor.
However, sources believed to be sponsored by the opposition in the State claimed that the suspect had sponsored Ihedioha’s election, alleging the Governor was culpable.
Ihedioha’s spokesman, Chibuike Onyeukwu in a statement made available to newsmen denied any illegal dealings with Odionyenma saying the Governor was not aware that the suspect was involved in any financial crimes.
Onyeukwu said “The Governor was not aware if he (Odionyenma) is involved in any form of crime or being investigated for financial crimes” even as he maintained that those behind the report were dubious characters.
Further, the statement read “We are not unaware that the false report is sponsored by some elements who have held Imo State down over the years and are known to have perpetuated various fraudulent acts. Their attempt to malign the hard earned reputation and integrity of His Excellency has already failed”.
According to the Governor, Nigerians have received the malicious report with disbelief, given the credibility and upright trajectory of his person, adding that he is a role model to the younger generations.
Odionyenma was one of the people listed as suspects by FBI and wanted for illegal financial dealings.
