Varsity takes over mission hospital in Enugu

The Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital (GOUNI), Enugu, says it has taken over the Ntasiobi Ndi N’afufu Hospital owned by the Catholic Church, Enugu as its Teaching Hospital.

The Chief Medical Director of the Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital,  Prof Cajethan Nwadinigwe made the disclosure while briefing newsmen in Enugu on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that former Ntasiobi Ndi N’afufu hospital was renamed Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga.

Nwadinigwe said that he had been mandated to reposition the hospital to serve the people of Enugu state, Nigeria and the world at large.

He said that as a faith based hospital and given its strategic position in Enugu, quality of its medicines and services were assured which would increase level of patronage.

The CMD explained that the hospital had a lot of linkages and collaborations and windows of opportunities for specialists in all medical fields.

According to him, Ntasiobi Ndi N’afufu hospital, now GOUNI, which was established in 1995, had become one of the biggest diocesan hospitals and would be revamped and transformed to meet the medical needs of Nigerians.

“The name has changed and there are tremendous services added to it and one of the mandates of the hospital is to lead in the production of manpower for healthcare in Nigeria and research.

“It is being repositioned to train medical students in all branches of manpower attached to healthcare and in few months, our medical students will start their training here.

“We are more interested in maternal and child care and other services like gynaecology/obstetrician, paediatrics and diagnostic centre.

“We will also engage in digital medical recording,” he said.

Nwadinigwe said that in the next six months to one year, there would be a lot of changes in terms of structure and infrastructure.

NAN reports that the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, had during the university’s 10th convocation announced the approval for the renaming of Ntasiobi Ndi N’afufu hospital as GOUNI Teaching Hospital.

Onaga said that the College of Medicine by the university had given the Catholic Church of Enugu Diocese the opportunity to make its contributions to training of medical doctors. (NAN)
