UNIZIK’s Social Sciences Dean, Prof Ugokwe-Joseph Rita ends term, as Mrs Katchy bows out

Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Prof Ugokwe-Joseph Rita yesterday gave her valedictory speech on a high note, remarking that during her term in office 25 Readers and Professors were promoted.

Prof Ugokwe-Joseph Rita thanked the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Prof Charles Okechukwu Esimone, FAS for his understanding which made it possible for some set of staff denied promotion for years in the faculty to get promoted.

Speaking during the last Faculty Board meeting of Faculty of Social Sciences at Uzoka Centre, Prof Ugokwe-Joseph Rita reminded that aside man power development that building of the social sciences Faculty complex and department of Psychology building complex became a reality during her adminstration.

She noted that the traditional ruler of Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Chidubem Iweka is building an Elderly people and Psychological center for the department of Psychology while another Philanthropist installed Solar lights to lighten up the environment for better night reading by students.

She announced that the faculty got 100 percent accreditation and peace existed simply because she recompensed for no evil even as she decided not to see challenges during her term in office.

While thanking Prof Esimone for his support to the successes the faculty recorded , the outgoing Dean Faculty of Social Sciences praised her Sub Dean, Prof Allen Adum for his loyalty and dedication ,even as she further thanked chairmen and members of various committees in the faculty for the support.

Meanwhile, it was mixed feelings when Prof Ugokwe-Joseph Rita announced the

retirement of Mrs Grace Katchy after 17 years of working with the department of Psychology as a casual staff.

When the general opinion of the attendees was that she was exploited and left to roast on a stipend of N10,000 a month, appealing that the department of Psychology and Faculty intervene in her situation for the management to give her children job in the university.

Rev Fr Dr C.C Ajelo later clarified that she was later placed on monthly stipend of N20,000 and her several months arrears sequel to covid-19 paid her after a send off package , adding that the Head of department, Dr Charles Anazonwa has written the Vice Chancellor to give any of her children who are graduates job.

Prof Ralph Eze, HoD political department among others were unhappy on the number of years Mrs Grace Katchy was exploited, hence the need for her children to be assisted.

In a brief chat with www.odogwublog.com ,Mrs Grace Katchy, appreciated the Dean Prof Ugokwe-Joseph Rita for her thoughtfulness in honouring her but appealed that her children be given jobs for her joy to be complete.

Mrs Katchy who is from Amikwo Awka and married to Umuogbu Awka, informed that she has three graduates looking for jobs and would be happy to see them working in Unizik as a gratuity and pension for her 17 years of selfless services to Unizik in the department of Psychology.

In his remarks later, former Rector , Federal Polytechnic Oko, Prof Godwin Onu described the outgoing Dean, Prof Ugokwe-Joseph Rita as a committed leader who showed class with a successful term in office, pointing out that leadership isn’t easy particularly working without funds; while the Sub-Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof Allen Adum described the outgoing Dean as humble despite her God given blessings, adding that she came with a vision and mission hence she is leaving the faculty better than she met it. Prof Adum wished that God gives Unizik more leaders like Prof Ugokwe-Joseph Rita because she is a leader par excellence. He said elitism has no place in her life hence he leant patience and humility better from her.

Commendations continued from Prof. JC Okafor Esq, Associate Prof Martin Okeke, Prof Collins Nwogwugwu and Prof Collins Okafor.

Aspirants for Governing Council Unizik election, ASU NAU welfare and Deanship election among others addressed the FSS Board on their aspiration.
