UNIZIK TO PARTNER CENTRE FOR REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO SET UP BUSINESS SCHOOL IN ONITSHA, OTHER COMMERCIAL CITIES

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka will partner the Centre for Regional and International Development (CRID) to set up business schools in Onitsha and Aba as well as other commercial cities in the South East Geopolitical zone. The Business school will be flagged off in a fortnight time at the Onitsha main market in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, Onitsha branch.

Disclosing this during the Inaugural Launch of the Leadership Learning and Development Unit of the institution held in Awka on Thursday, 28th April 2022, UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone, FAS, stated that setting up the Business School in the Commercial nerve centre of the state and beyond has become necessary owing to avalanche of business moguls and industrialists in the zone who are yearning to key into the modern ways of doing business across the global.

Esimone stated that the UNIZIK Business School (UBS) in line with the vision for ‘Project 200’ has developed a programme to partner with the blossoming business communities in five states of the zone as well as create a synergy with International Business Communities which will showcase Business men and women of South East extraction and other Nigerians outside the shores who market their product ideas and blueprints to other parts of the globe.

The Chief Executive revealed that a line of communication has been opened with the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the CRID which will led to fruitful engagement with major commercial cities in the South East Zone. He also disclosed that the courses to be offered by the Unit are contemporary designed to meet current local and global challenges.

In his reaction while Introducing CRID and talking on the topic: ”Where tomorrow’s leaders are developed today”, the Chief Executive Officer of the CRID, United Kingdom, Mr Nicholas Aitalegbe posited that UNIZIK is fulfilling one of the objectives of a tertiary institution via the fusion of town and gown by collaborating with the CRID and Onitsha Centre of Commerce to establish a business school unit within the commercial axis of the state.

Aitalegbe opined that the programmes of the UBS should not stop at training and empowering resource persons with the requisite knowledge but must ensure the knowledge is passed across to further equip and enhance businesses within the region and beyond. Aitalegbe pointed out that the third world economy such as that of Nigeria can only advance better if opportunities like this is created as this will aid the growth of businesses in the country and continent at large.

On his part, the Chairperson Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Chief Kevin Obieri disclosed that the Chamber has a proposal for Business School and Chinese Language Centre having studied the terrain of commercial cities in the zone, ease of carrying out business and programmes that will add value to the system. He stated that the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce will offer all the necessary support and technical assistance to the institution towards achieving this noble objective.

Other highlights were comments and feedback from invited guests, public and private sector representatives at the event. Present at the occasion were members of the University Management, Governing Council members, principal officers of the UBS and the institution.
