Dr. Mrs. Adaobi Okeke, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, awarded 12 students 5 Marks for promptly answering questions during her lecture on Monday.
Dr. Okeke, upon noticing that students were not actively participating in the lectures, decided to award the first twelve students who answered questions with 5 marks each. According to her, they were the only ones paying attention and therefore deserves a reward. “Keep it up” she said “This is just to encourage you all to work hard”
This act got mixed reactions from the students. Some were eager to answer questions while others murmured against it. One of the students, who was interviewed by the journalist on the act of lecturer, said it was not fair as not everyone who wanted to answer had the chance. “She just picked those in front while most of the students at the back, who raised their hands, were not asked” said the student.
The rewards, however, brought the class back to life as the students became more active in the class. After the class, the names of the lucky students were collected and submitted to the lecturer’s desk by the course representative.
