Trial Census: NPC seeks support, cooperation from Anambra communities

The National Population Commission (NPC) in Anambra State has called for support and cooperation from Anambra communities for the conduct of trial census in their localities ahead of the 2023 population and housing census.

The Commissioner representing Anambra State at the National Population commission, Mr Chidi Ezeoke made the appeal when led other principal officials of the commission in the state to an advocacy tour/stakeholders meeting to Awka-Etiti and Nnobi respectively. 

He described the trial census as dress rehearsal to evaluate all aspects of the census operation before the main census.

He said exercise will be conducted in all enumeration areas in one local government area and in one state in each of the six geopolitical zones in the country.

He disclosed that a total of 1249 trained personnel, including Supervisors and Enumerators were expected to go round the designated communities in Idemili South Local Government Area numbering houses and enumerating members of households in the selected enumeration areas.

The State Director National Population Commission, Tpl Joachim Ulasi noted that the aim of the visit was to seek assurances of cooperation and security from the seven communities in Idemili South before the exercise. 

He said, “The advocacy visit is very important because you cannot enter the communities without telling them you are coming. 

“The essence is to gain support of the people of the area by way of security of life and materials, and sensitize the people that we are around and in town to carry out our exercise.

“What we have done today is inform them in advance that we are coming to do trial census in the communities that make up Idemili South and the exercise is to test our equipment to be deployed in the conduct of proper census next year.”

In their seperate responses, the stakeholders in Awka-Etiti and Nnobi respectively assured their readiness to participate actively in the trial census. 

They also promised warm reception to the NPC personnel on commencement of the exercise.
