Tension in Anambra Community Over Diversion of Constituency Projects

There is uneasy calm in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, sequel to alleged diversion of two constituency projects meant for the people that were reportedly hijacked by an erstwhile member of the disbanded caretaker of the town’s union.

Impeccable sources within the community told our roving reporter that the two projects were attracted by the Member, representing Oyi/Ayamelum Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Gabriel Onyenwife some years ago

According to our sources, the two constituency projects which included a multi-million-naira water borehole and a giant electricity power generator were part of the projects sited in the community at the behest of Onyenwife purposely to reciprocate the massive votes he garnered in the area in the last general election.

It was reliably gathered that the joy of the people that scarcity of potable water in the area would be a thing of the past, however, turned sour when it was later discovered that a former financial secretary of the dissolved caretaker committee of the town union (names withheld) allegedly diverted the water project to his private compound.

Our scoop uncovered that an uneasy calm had eclipsed after the discovery of the fraudulent hijacking of the water project and the brand new giant generator provided by the parliamentarian for hitch-free operation of the water borehole.

When our investigative team confronted the incumbent President-General of Nkwelle-Ezunaka Town Union (NEU), Leonard Areh Onyenze, he confirmed the report and disclosed that the matter had been under shrewd investigation and necessary action would be taken in due course.

Onyenze also stated that the embattled ex-financial secretary of the disbanded NEU caretaker committee had inexplicably refused to hand over the financial books and relevant records in his custody since December 30, 2019, when the community successfully conducted the election of new NEU executive team.

Efforts to get the reaction of Onyenwife on the controversial issue proved abortive because he did not pick phone calls put across by our investigative team, but one of his political aides who did not want his name in print, confirmed that his boss actually sponsored a water borehole project in Nkwelle together with a giant electric generator, expressing dismay over the alleged hijack of the gesture by an individual.
