The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra Chapter and the Local Organising Committee of the 2020 National Police Games have agreed to works closely to ensure effective coverage of the games which will commence on Feb. 29.
The agreement was reached when the leadership of SWAN in Anambra led by Anthony Oji and Chimezie Anaso, Chairman and Secretary respectively paid courtesy call on CP John Abang, the Commissioner of Police in his office.
Speaking on behalf of the association, Oji expressed delight that the Police Hierarchy approved Anambra as the host state of the event and pledged the readiness of SWAN to ensure that optimal reportage of the games was achieved.
He said there was need to mainstream SWAN in the organisation of the NPG so that members of the association which cut across the wire service, radio, television, print and online news media would be mobilised for wider reach.
According to him, SWAN is the body of journalists with specialty in the reportage of sporting events, in view of this we are of the opinion that only the best possible professional coverage would be enough for this biennial NPG in Anambra.
“Our membership include practitioners in the wire service, print, radio, television and online news medium, we would in active collaboration with the Information Directorate of Police Sports Department,” he said.
In his response, CP Abang, who is also the chairman of LOC said the visit of SWAN was timely and that police was accepting the hands of partnership the sports writers extended to them.
Abang who received the SWAN leadership alongside DCP Chris Owolabi who is the Secretary of the LoC said the involvement of sports writers would go a long way to making the job of organisers a lot easier.
The LOC said preparations had reached advanced stage and that all was set for the commencement of the games.
He said the technical committee of the NPG from force headquarters would arrive Anambra on Feb.20 while athletes from across the country were expected to begin to arrive on Feb. 26.
He thanked the Anambra government for the support the Police had received towards successful coverage of the 2020 NPG.
