SOLUDO AND THE POLITICS OF SELF-BRANDING
I woke up to yet another headline: “Modern Rehabilitation Centre at Nibo being constructed by Gov Soludo”. And once again, I’m struck by the governor’s relentless habit of rebranding existing projects as personal achievements, without acknowledging the actual facilitators behind them.
Let’s set the record straight. The so-called “SOLUTION Rehabilitation Centre” is not a new construction initiated by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. It is, in fact, a federal government-funded Primary Health Care Centre (Type A), located in Nibo and facilitated through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on SDGs. This facility was completed in 2018, fully equipped with modern clinical tools, yes, even the toilets came with water heaters. It was designed to complement the existing health center nearby and elevate the standard of care for the people of Nibo.
Due to bureaucratic delays, the project after completion was handed over to the Willie Obiano administration, which unfortunately failed to commission it. Now, years later, Soludo steps in, not to build, but to repaint and fence the already completed structure, and suddenly it’s being paraded as a flagship achievement of his administration.
Let me be clear: I have no objection to the facility being repurposed for rehabilitation. What I take issue with is the deliberate misinformation being spread by Soludo’s media team, claiming he constructed the center “from scratch.” This is not just misleading, it’s a calculated erasure of the efforts and resources that went into the original project.
And now, the numbers speak louder than the paint on the walls. A staggering ₦417,319,619.85 was awarded for the so-called “construction” of the State Rehabilitation Centre at Nibo. But let’s call it what it is: fencing and repainting of an already existing, fully equipped facility. There is no new construction here, no groundbreaking innovation, no architectural overhaul. Just cosmetic touch-ups dressed up as transformation.
How does fencing and repainting a completed building balloon into a contract worth over ₦417 million? What exactly is being modelled, and at what cost to taxpayers? This is not rehabilitation, it’s rebranding with a bloated price tag. And it raises serious questions about procurement transparency, fiscal discipline, and the priorities of this administration.
Soludo’s obsession with self-naming, branding every initiative with “SOLUTION” as if governance were a personal PR campaign, is not leadership. It’s self-gratification. And it sets a dangerous precedent where credit is hoarded, history is rewritten, and public trust is eroded.
This isn’t just about mislabeling a project. It’s about misappropriating public funds under the guise of progress. It’s about turning governance into a vanity project, where the optics of leadership matter more than the substance. Soludo’s administration seems more invested in branding buildings with “SOLUTION” signage than in acknowledging the foundational work done by others, or in delivering truly new infrastructure.
If this is the model of leadership we’re being sold, then it’s time to ask: who is really benefiting from these contracts? Because it certainly isn’t the people of Nibo, who were promised a health facility years ago and are now being handed a repainted version of the same building, wrapped in political fanfare.
Anambra deserves leaders who build, not just repaint. Who uplift, not just rename. Who serve, not self-promote. We must resist this culture of political appropriation and demand transparency, humility, and truth from those who lead us.
