Show more interest in politics, Group urges women

An NGO, League of Women Voters of Nigeria, has urged Nigerian women to show more interest in politics by contesting for more elective positions.

National Programme Director of the organisation, Mrs Titilayo Akerele, stated this during a lecture at a training programme, organised by the NGO, on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti.

While stating that politics should not be left for men alone, she stressed the need for women to avoid playing second fiddle in the business of governance.

According to Akerele, the percentage of the women occupying political positions in the country is not encouraging, hence the need for attitudinal change among others.

  1. In Nigeria today women don’t fully participate in politics which is bad, politics are no meant for only men,As stipulated in the law doctrine that men and woman have the right to vote so therefore women also have the right to participate in politics activities because it’s an equal right ,women’s in our society have to standup and partake in political Funtions because it will also let them know how the country’s revenue is used and managed.

  2. Women should be given opportunity to run election for public offices like the men. The women in politics are really not encouraging,we need to motivate ourselves. The both gender are equal so as the men are in politics so also can women be.

  3. The active participation of women, on equal terms with men,at all levels of decision making and political involvement is essential to the achievement of equality, sustained development, peace and democracy. Despite this, women are facing obstacles in their political participation worldwide therefore women should be encouraged to contest for elective positions in government and should be allowed to exercise their franchise fully.
