Shettima Cautions Against Misuse of LG Autonomy

Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized that the recent Supreme Court ruling, granting full financial autonomy to local government councils, will boost Nigeria’s universal basic education system.
Speaking at the launch of a book titled ‘Navigating the Politics of Universal Education Policies in Nigeria’, authored by former Ekiti State Deputy Governor Modupe Adelabu, Shettima warned against abusing this newfound autonomy. He highlighted that local governments, which handle primary education, can now better address financial constraints that have previously hindered educational progress.
Shettima also reassured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing reforms will tackle the challenges affecting universal education in the country.
The Supreme Court’s decision mandates direct allocation of 20.60% of funds to the 774 local governments, bypassing governors’ control. This has already led to local government elections in around 15 states.
