Scavengers jailed 9 months each for stealing 11 cell phones

A Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced two scavengers to nine months imprisonment each for public nuisance and stealing 11 cell phones.

Abdul Abubakar, 20 and Zaki’u Idris, 22
pleaded guilty to public nuisance and theft and begged for leniency.

The Judge, Malam Saminu Suleiman, however, gave the convicts an option to pay a fine of N20,000 each and warned them to desist from committing crime in the future.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Chinedu Ogada, told the court that the patrol team of Zuba police station on patrol along Tungamaje live stock market Abuja arrested the convicts.

Ogada said the patrol team arrested the convicts to on May 9 at about 8: 47 p.m. with 47 cartons of different cell phones..

He stated that during police interrogation and investigation, the convicts confessed to the crime and 11 cell phones were recovered from them and handed over to the owner.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 405 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
