Pope Francis recovering well after surgery in Rome – Vatican

The Vatican on Monday reported that Pope Francis who underwent scheduled colon surgery in Rome was recuperating well.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement released on Sunday that “the Holy Father, who was admitted to the A. Gemelli Policlinic [in Rome] in the afternoon, underwent the planned surgery for diverticular stenosis of the colon.’’

Bruni added that Pope Francis “reacted well to the operation performed under general anesthesia.”

Italian Cardinal Enrico Feroci told newsmen at a Rome airport that “as of today (Monday)’’ the pontiff was feeling good and convalescing.

“Our prayer and our closeness are great. I spoke to Cardinal Vicar [Angelo De Donatis] this morning and he told me that the pope was feeling good.’’

According to medical sources, the first night Pope Francis spent in the hospital went calm. He is expected to stay there for at least five days.
