Police Arrest Suspected Gunrunner in Anambra
The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a suspected gunrunner accused of renting firearms and other weapons to criminals in the Awka area for their operations. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the arrest on Tuesday in Awka. The suspect, whose identity is withheld, hails from Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, and was arrested on December 6, 2024. Ikenga stated that the arrest followed a raid by Police operatives from the Anti-Cultism Squad, Enugu Ukwu, who acted on credible intelligence. They targeted a known criminal hotspot in Umunaga village, Awka South LGA. During the operation, two suspects from Umunaga and Umuneri villages were apprehended. Recovered items included a pump-action gun, three live cartridges, a cutlass, charms, and substances suspected to be hard drugs. The Police also rescued two women who had allegedly been sexually assaulted by the suspects. Further investigations revealed that the arrested suspects had rented guns and other weapons from the gunrunner, leading to his swift arrest. The PPRO confirmed that the case will be taken to court once the investigation is complete.
