Petition Accuses APC of Plot to Infiltrate NDC in Enugu
Lawrence Nwimo, Awka
A group that identified itself as the Enugu Citizens Intelligence Network has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State is plotting to infiltrate the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) with its members and undermine the political support base of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the South-East region.
In a petition dated May 14, 2026, and addressed to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the NDC in Abuja, the group alleged that politicians associated with the APC’s “City Boys Movement” were being strategically positioned within opposition platforms, particularly the NDC, to hijack party structures and manipulate electoral processes.
The petition, signed by the State Chairman of the group, Ferdinand Asogwa, and Secretary, Stanley Ngwu, claimed that intelligence gathered by the group pointed to what it described as a “coordinated infiltration strategy” allegedly aimed at weakening opposition politics in the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the group, the alleged planned infiltration was designed to place loyalists of the APC within the NDC structures in order to secure key party tickets, especially National Assembly positions, while allegedly working against the interests of opposition forces in the region.
The petition specifically mentioned one Nelson Maduka Arum, popularly known as “Mama,” whose movement into the NDC, the group said, should be subjected to urgent scrutiny.
“Information available to our network suggests that his political activities deserve urgent scrutiny, as there are concerns that he is part of a broader political operation involving individuals associated with the City Boys Movement and other political actors spread across the South-East region,” the petition stated.
The group alleged that Arum and some other individuals joining the NDC and other opposition parties in the South-East might not be motivated by ideological conviction but by a calculated attempt to influence internal party processes and weaken genuine opposition structures from within.
“Our concerns are heightened by reports of Mr. Nelson Maduka Arum’s previous political relationships and activities, including ties with ruling party interests and government-linked circles,” the petition added.
The group further alleged that there were fears among stakeholders that certain individuals could attempt to hijack senatorial and National Assembly tickets of the NDC in Enugu and other parts of the South-East, while allegedly sabotaging broader opposition interests in the region. They warned that failure to address the alleged infiltration could threaten the unity, credibility, and strategic direction of the NDC beyond a single election cycle.
The group called on the national leadership of the NDC to immediately investigate the alleged coordinated infiltration of the party by persons allegedly acting on behalf of external political interests. They also demanded thorough background checks and political due diligence on aspirants and newly emerging blocs seeking strategic positions within the party.
In addition, the group urged the party leadership to investigate alleged links between some entrants into the NDC and political structures connected to the APC’s “City Boys Movement” and ruling party interests.
“We refuse to stand by and watch any alleged attempt to manipulate or undermine the aspirations of citizens seeking credible political alternatives,” the group stated.
