Outrage as Katsina plans release of 70 bandits

Socio-political groups, religious leaders and security experts have condemned the Katsina State Government’s plan to release 70 suspected bandits under a peace deal, warning it could fuel insecurity and reward violence.

Groups including Afenifere, ACF, Ohanaeze and the Middle Belt Forum urged the Federal Government to halt the move, describing it as reckless and unconstitutional. Katsina has recorded over 1,500 civilian deaths from bandit attacks since 2021.

The state government defended the plan, saying it is meant to consolidate peace and secure the release of abductees, but officials declined to confirm whether the bandits have already been freed.
