Our Lady’s High School, Onitsha vows to transform alma mater

The 1979 set of Our Lady’s High School, Onitsha, popularly known as “79 Corner Stone Set”, has vowed vehemently to transform their alma mater, for better academic performance of the students of the college.

This was made known by the Senior Prefect of the set, Dr. Mike Ozoemena, during a One-Day Annual Convention and Reunion after forty-three years of leaving school, organized by the set for its members both at home and in the diaspora, at De Lumen Suites, GRA, Onitsha.

Dr. Ozoemena, who doubled as the coordinator of the event, spoke on the origin of the 79 set platform, its missions ,visions objectives and achievements so far, maintaining that the set was committed towards promoting, fostering and advancing fellowship among their members all over the world like every other noble and focused body.

He noted that the set had as part of its social responsibility, presented twenty-five whiteboards, markers and inks to the management of the school.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Pharmacist Innocent Chukwuanu, explained that the set was committed towards making its alma mater a center of excellence, saying that the essence of the event is not only for eating, drinking and merrymaking, but also to afford the members an opportunity to think out how they could contribute for the betterment of the school.

While calling for unification of the entire old students of the school as one umbrella body, Pharmacist Chukwuanu, stated that one of the major challenges facing the set now is how to fence the school to save the students and the teachers from attacks by unscrupulous elements in the area.

Also, the patron of the set and a one-time game master of the school, Chief Emeka Okonkwo, spoke on his efforts while in service to make the set and others in the school better persons when they leave the school, especially in the areas of sporting activities and academic performances.

The set which later presented a cash award of one hundred and fifty thousand naira to the Principal of the School, Dr. Mrs. Njideka Nwoye, for her hard work, dedication to duty, and excellent performance, also, recognized the excellent performances of the first, second and third best students of the school by presenting cash awards of one hundred thousand naira each to the Students.

Others who benefitted equally in the cash awards were the twelve most professional and exceptional teachers of the school who smiled home with twenty thousand naira each.

The set further presented a carton of duster to the Principal of the school during the event in fulfilment of its promise to the management of the school during a visit to the school last year.

Expressing her joy, the Principal of the school, Dr. Mrs. Nwoye, described the event as a dream come true, adding that God had used the set to do a marvelous thing in the school and prayed him to reward them according to their individual needs.

Other highlights of the occasion include cutting of the reunion cake by members of the set amid the Principal of the school Dr.Mrs.Nwoye among others and presentation of goodwill messages by friends and well-wishers of the set while vote of thanks was said by the Secretary, Planning Committee of the event,Sir John Okafor, who thanked God for the success of the event as well as the sponsors of the event for their sacrifice towards bringing the set together forty-three years after school.
