NSF: LOC condoles with Imo Govt over boxer’s death

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the National Sports Festival (NSF) has described the death of Chukwuemeka Igboanugo, an Imo State boxer,  during a boxing event as unfortunate.

Odogwublog reports that the boxer received a devastating blow during a competition, which caused him to bleed in the nose, but returned to continue the fight after treatment.

Igboanugo, who finished the fight and lost to his opponent, collapsed after leaving the ring unaided.

Are said though every logistic was provided, including medical, accidents were bound to happen in sports.

“It was so unfortunate that the guy was hit on the chin and probably it affected his brain. In that situation, there was nothing anybody could do.

The medical team was there, the athlete was stabilised and before they could get to the hospital, he died.

“It is quite unfortunate; we just pray that his soul will rest in peace, our condolences go to the state and members of his family.

“This is sport, accidents happen and we just have to take it the way it is, even though we provided what was required medical wise,” he said.

Are said the festival had been successful, in spite of the few challenges experienced.

Efforts were made to put the various Game Villages in shape by providing power generators where they did not exist and money for diesel where they existed.

He said there was poor power supply in Asaba City which was why power was rationed in the day time and night while noting that it was unrealistic to expect 24 hour supply at the camps.
