Now 70, The Amazing Jude Emecheta

My friend and colleague, Jude, turns 70 today, and I cannot help wondering: What a man!
Sir Jude Okechukwu Emecheta, PhD, is one of those rare personalities whose life and career have travelled through several terrains without losing their distinctive character. Born in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, he has recorded proven success as an advertising practitioner. He is also social communication strategist with feats, as well as a public administrator, political tactician and community mobilisation expert.
His journey has been as colourful as his personality. As an undergraduate, he earned the nickname “Baba Eje”. His prowess on the football field brought him another — “Seaman”. In the cultural realm, he became “Nwachinemelu”, while close colleagues and friends simply call him “Nwachi”.
He has traversed professional football, advertising, government service and political organisation, leaving his imprint in each of these spheres.
He aptly fits John C. Maxwell’s often-cited description of leadership: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.”
Jude has certainly demonstrated those qualities in his various assignments, particularly in community mobilisation and public administration, where he has shown an unusual capacity to organise people, ideas and resources towards defined objectives.
He is perhaps best known to the wider public as the pioneer Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra State Signage and Advertising Agency (ANSAA), a position he held from 2014 to 2022. That is very understandable.
At ANSAA, Jude helped establish the regulatory and operational structures that gave the agency a firm footing. Under his leadership, the agency pursued the regulation of outdoor advertising, removed unauthorised billboards and signboards, enforced statutory signage fees and helped expand the outdoor advertising sector in the state.
ANSAA reported the removal of about 850 illegal signboards within 10 months and the prosecution of more than 4,000 cases of advertising violations involving individuals, companies and political entities.
The street and house-numbering initiative in Awka was another practical intervention associated with his tenure. It helped make navigation and identification of properties considerably easier in the state capital.
His work did not go unnoticed within the advertising industry. In 2021, the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) honoured ANSAA as the best advertising agency in Nigeria and also recognised Jude for his leadership.
But Jude’s story does not end with advertising.
In politics, he has also demonstrated considerable organisational capacity. He was a leader of the Willie Obiano Support Group and later became Chairman of Anambra Demands Soludo (ADS). Through both bodies, which he operated successfully, in seperate periods, he played active roles in the campaigns that supported the emergence of Willie Obiano and, subsequently, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo as governors of Anambra State.
Whether in advertising, government, community mobilisation or political organisation, Jude has always seemed comfortable working behind the scenes, connecting people, building structures and getting things done. This is perhaps one reason colleagues often see him as a dependable “go-to guy”.
Yet, beyond the titles, offices and accomplishments, there is another side to Jude.
In the words of the great poet, Maya Angelou: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
That thought resonates with those who know Jude personally. He is warm, resourceful, generous with counsel and remarkably comfortable with people across generations and social backgrounds.
Yet, when friends and close colleagues call him “Nwachi”, it is not merely another nickname. It captures the familiarity and affection that come from years of friendship, shared experiences, jokes, laughter and mutual respect.
Jude has a radiant smile. He flows easily with younger colleagues and friends, and he possesses that rare ability to make people feel at home around him. Even in serious moments, he can inject humour and ease tension.
He is also a Knight of the Ancient Order of St John International of the Catholic Church — another dimension to a life that has embraced service, faith, professional commitment and community engagement.
At 70, Sir Jude Okechukwu Emecheta can look back on a life that has crossed many paths: football, advertising, public administration, politics, community organisation and friendship.
And those who know him will readily tell you that the man behind the titles is every bit as interesting as the titles themselves.
Sir Jude is amazing.
His becoming a septuagenarian is good news — news worthy of every raised glass and every clink of glasses in celebration.
