A group known as the Northern Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN) has opposed the scrapping of the police unit,

This is following Sunday’s scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force as result of widespread protests over allegations of extrajudicial killings of youths

The group said the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, should reform it for the optimum performance without violating human right of any individual or suspect.

The national speaker of the youth group, Ukkasha Hamza Rahama, who stated this on Sunday during a press conference shortly after a protest by the group, calling for the reform of SARS, held at the NUJ press center in Bauchi, said the recent decision of the IGP to ban SARS, STS and IRT from routine patrol on streets as well as the decision to ban the personnel of SARS from tactical assignment in mufti is a good step taken in the right direction in his effort to ensure professional outlook for the Nigeria Police.

“We in our organisation, we kick against any humiliation, harassment or intimidation by any security per­sonnel.

“We say instead, the police should follow the laid down rules of apprehending and prosecuting any suspect as it is practiced in some developed nations.

“However, we are totally against the scrapping of SARS; we are in support of reforming the SARS to enable them operate in a professional manner where citizens will appreciate them more.
