Nigeria unveils record 172-man squad for 2025 African arm-wrestling championship in Abuja

Nation gears up to host the continent’s biggest arm-wrestling event with historic team selection and growing momentum.

With just under a month to go, Nigeria has officially named a 172-member squad for the 14th African Armwrestling Championship, scheduled to hold in Abuja from July 23 to 27, 2025.

Announced by the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAWF), the squad represents the country’s most ambitious participation yet, featuring top male and female athletes, para-athletes, and emerging youth talents drawn from across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The selected athletes are currently in camp at the TDC Training Facility in Abuja, where they are undergoing intensive preparations. The camp will serve as the final build-up venue before the continental showdown, further underlining Nigeria’s all-out commitment to both hosting and excelling in the championship.

“This team reflects the heart of Nigerian sport resilient, unified, and battle-ready,” said NAWF President, Engr. Samuel Jackson. “From seasoned champions to new talents, we are ready to make a statement. The world will feel Nigeria’s strength and spirit at the armwrestling table this July.”

Largest Team, Home Advantage
Nigeria is no stranger to the African armwrestling scene, but 2025 marks a turning point as the country fields its largest-ever team in the competition’s history. The championship is expected to attract over 20 participating nations, and Team Nigeria’s size and diversity are seen as strategic advantages on home soil.

The 2025 edition also marks Nigeria’s second time hosting the event, and organizers say it’s shaping up to be the most expansive and impactful yet.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC), in collaboration with NAWF, has secured several strategic partnerships to ensure the championship meets international standards. Key sponsors and stakeholders, including Prostar Sports International (official kit partner), have committed resources toward logistics, branding, accommodation, and media engagement.

The official mascot and competition jersey were recently unveiled to wide acclaim, adding to the growing anticipation in both local and continental sports circles.

As the countdown to ABUJA 2025 begins, expectations are high for a tournament that could redefine the future of armwrestling in Africa and Nigeria is determined to lead the charge.
