Mrs Obiano Visits Persons Displaced By Flood, Distributes Relief Materials

Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Dr Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano and founder of the charity organization, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFE, has visited the four holding camps in Ogbaru and Onitsha North Local Government Areas, where thousands of persons displaced by flood in the area are currently taking shelter.

The Governor’s wife also donated relief materials to the four camps including foods, drugs, clothes, sanitary products, toiletries and other household items.

The four holding centres are located at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ossomala and Ogbaru Local Government headquarters, Atani, Central School, Odekpe and Crowder Primary School, Onitsha which shelters some displaced persons from Anambra West.

Anambra State currently has seventeen holding centres across six local government areas heavily affected by the flood which are Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Onitsha North and Onitsha South.

Addressing the people at the centre, Dr Mrs. Obiano noted that even though the occurrence could be attributed to climate change, the government has ensured that every modality is put in place to ensure that persons at the centres are given maximum care.

The Governor’s wife who expressed sadness at the situation, noted that as a mother, she felt the compassion to come around and see the people at the camps, and added that her works would not be complete if she did not come to see how her children are bracing the menace.

Speaking to newsmen, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala said that the Ministry has been monitoring the situations at the camps over the past weeks, observing that rapid response health teams had been deployed across the twenty-one local government areas of Anambra State with special focus on regions badly hit by the incident.

The Transition Committee Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Mr. Arinze Awogu said that a total of one thousand six hundred and thirty-one persons are taking shelter in Ossomala camp, one thousand seven hundred and thirty-five at Atani camp, and nine hundred and seventy-eight at Odekpe, and praised the efforts of the Anambra State Government in taking good care of the people at the centres.

Mrs. Ogochukwu Ifeanyi , Mrs. Chioma Adinkwu, and Mr Udoka Chukwurah, who spoke on behalf of the residents of the camps, noted that the early intervention and consistent reach-out by the state government and the pragmatic efforts of the local council have helped made life easier for the camp residents.

Dr Mrs Obiano was joined in the visits by the Anambra State Commissioner for Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue and other government officials.
