Motorcycle passenger dies in Anambra accident

A passenger being conveyed on a motorcycle has been confirmed dead in an accident with a truck at Awkuzu junction on Onitsha-Awka Expressway, Anambra State.

Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, Commander of the  Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Thursday.

He said that the suspected cause of the accident was load violation.

“The accident involved an unidentified driver of a commercial truck with body code number: 371 and a driver of a motorcycle.

“According to eyewitness, the motorcyclist was overtaking the truck when the very long load he was carrying  hit the truck, which made the motorcycle passenger fall off, and then was hit by the moving truck.

“A total of four male adults were involved in the crash. The motorcyclist sustained injury, his passenger was killed and others were rescued unhurt.

“The FRSC rescue team rushed the victims to Chira Hospital, Akwuzu,  where the motorcycle passenger was confirmed dead and his corpse deposited at Wisdom mortuary, ” he said.

 Irelewuyi said that the truck driver had been handed over to the Police Division at Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

While condoling with the family of the dead, the Sector Commander urged motorists to desist from disobeying traffic rules and regulations.

 “Drive to save your life and the lives of others on the road,” he said.(NAN)
