Man Utd’s hopes of Koulibaly transfer are over after Napoli confirmation

Manchester United’s aim of landing Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly in cut-price deal have been dashed by the Serie A club.

The Red Devils had hoped to capitalise on the financial fallout of the coronavirus outbreak and land the Senegal international at a discount price.

Clubs across the continent are feeling the strain of a lack of match-day income and many could be forced to sell their stars to balance the books this summer.

But Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli insisted his club will not be lowering their £100million asking price for Koulibaly, who is contracted at Stadio San Paolo until 2023.

“Kalidou is a great player, who still has a long contract with us,” Giuntoli said. “If we were to sell, the club could ask for a large sum.

“A player like this cannot change his value even in a crisis, so we are not moving our valuation.”

Koulibaly, 28, is one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe after winning the Serie A Best Defender award for the 2018/19 season.
