Man in court over alleged assault, attempted culpable homicide in Benue
The police, on Wednesday in Benue, arraigned one Thomas Iti before a Makurdi Magistrates’ Court over alleged criminal conspiracy, assault, criminal intimidation and attempted culpable homicide.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Rachael Mchiave, told the court that the case was received at State CID on Nov. 16.
She said that the case was received from B.C. Abee, on behalf of the families of Tse-Awua and Tse-Ude all of Mbagba Settlement, Mbasombo in Gwer-East Local Government Area of Benue.
Mchiave said that on Sept. 22, the defendant, of No.1 Aduku Road, Ikpayongo, Gwer East Council Area, criminally conspired with some of his thugs and attacked one Mr Iortyer Ayakwav.
She said that the thugs, numbering about 10, illegally armed themselves with dangerous weapons, such as guns, cutlasses and sticks.
The prosecutor further said the accused beat the defendant mercilessly and inflicted injuries on his body, without any provocation and left him helplessly on the ground in the pool of his own blood.
“Iti and his thugs proceeded to the house of James Tsekwar, also of Mbasombo village, searched his house and threatened to kill him if they see him.
“After their operation, they left the premises and one Mrs Tina James saw a barrater pistol, with live ammunition within their premises,” she said.
The prosecutor said that the defendant was arrested during police investigation for committing the offence, while others were still at large.
According to her, the offences contravene Sections 97, 265, 398 and 231 of the Penal Code, Laws of Benue State, 2004.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that when the case came up for mention, no plea was taken, for want of jurisdiction.
The Magistrate, Mrs Kadoom Gbasha, remanded the defendant in the custodial centre, Makurdi, and adjourned the case till Dec. 21, for further mention. (NAN)
