Man, 22, charged over apparent robbery of 40 motorcycles worth N10.8m

A man, Israel Ojo, 22, on Wednesday, appeared before an Akure Magistrate’s Court, charged with stealing 40 units of motorcycle worth N10.8million

The defendant, whose address was not provided, allegedly committed the offence sometimes in March 2021 at No. 29, Oke Aro St., Akure, but he pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The Prosecutor, Insp Augustine Omheimhen, informed the court that the defendant and others at large stole the motorcycles, property of one Alaro Kasim, the complainant.

He said the offence was contrary to Section 383 and Punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Omheimhen prayed the court to remand the defendant in the Correctional Centre and to give him time to study the case file and get his witnesses prepared for trial.

The counsel to the defendant, Mr  Olanrewaju Akinware, however, opposed the prosecutors’ application for the remand  of his client and urged the court to admit him to bail in liberal terms.

Akmiware said that the defendant, according to law, was deemed innocent until otherwise proved guilty, adding that reasonable sureties would be provided if granted bail.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.Y Yakubu, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N2, 000,000. with two sureties who must be residents in Akure with verifiable home addresses. (NAN)
