Magistrate Court remands labourer for stealing maize

An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Thursday, ordered that a labourer, James Joseph, 30, who pleaded guilty to stealing maize from a farm, be remanded in a correctional centre.

The police charged Joseph with theft.

Magistrate A. A. Ayeni ordered that Joseph be remanded in Ile-Ife Nigerian Correctional centre, pending sentencing.

Ayeni adjourned the case until Sept 23 for sentencing.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sept. 3, 2021 at Ogudu Village via Ile-Ife.

Abdullahi said that the defendant stole maize N63,000, property of  Olarewaju Johnson.

He said the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace when he trespassed into the farm of  Johnson.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 249 (d) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
