Senator Temitope Olatoye was shot dead

Blood flowed freely in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Saturday afternoon, during the conduct of the governorship election, as a serving member of House of Representative, Mr. Temitope Olatoye, representing Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency, was shot dead.

Olatoye, fondly called ‘Sugar’, who was a member of Oyo State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2015, was said to have been shot in the head. The bullets purportedly hit one of his eyes, and he was badly injured.

He was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State until he left the party in the last quarter of 2018 when he lost the Oyo Central senatorial ticket to a former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, who is now a senator-elect. He defected to Action Democratic Party (ADP), where he picked the ticket, contested on February 23, 2019, and lost.

The federal lawmaker was said to have run into an ambush laid for him by his attackers when he was returning from his village, Onigbodogi in Lagelu Local Government Area, where he had gone to vote.

As gathered, it was an epic battle between Olatoye, Chairman, House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning, and his attackers during the encounter, as many people from both sides were reportedly killed too.

After the incident, he was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH). He was said to be receiving treatment in one of the resuscitation rooms in the Accident and Emergency Unit of the teaching hospital.

The Head, Public Relations Unit of UCH, Mr. Toye Akinrinlola, confirmed the death of Olatoye to journalists adding that the deceased was initially rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the teaching hospital, where medical practitioners battled to save his life.

One of his Olatoye’s aides, who preferred anonymity, said: “Sugar was badly injured, though he was also courageous to defend himself very well. He was shot in the eye and had to be been taken to the accident and emergency unit of UCH.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Oyo State Police Command, Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi, could not confirm the incident, saying he was just gathering facts about the incident.
